Karla is a naturopath and wellness practitioner.
Carrie is a peacebuilder and nature enthusiast.
We have a deep passion for community healing, especially in Detroit.
Karla opened a naturopathic health, healing and wellness practice a few miles from Carrie’s parents' house in Detroit and was looking for yoga teachers. Carrie heard about it, and emailed Karla in August 2013 with the subject: “Healing in Detroit” and our connection was born.
Carrie taught yoga at Karla's center, Exhalation Integrative Wellness, that fall, and we finally sat down in December to break bread together and explore our deep overlapping interests in community healing. We talked about peacebuilding and restorative justice, natural rEVOLutions and the dream of a community herb garden in Detroit.

In January 2014 we signed up for a Garden Leadership Training by an organization that supports community gardening, Growing Hope. We did not have a location identified
or secured for our garden at that time.
On the way to our first class in February, Karla mentioned she'd like to start the garden in the vacant land across the street from her family home. Karla had lived there for 18 years, with 3 different generations. Her grandmother had lived there for over 50 years, and her older sister lived next door, but the property was no longer in family hands.
Our first task in in our class was to draw our Garden Vision. Carrie drew this picture of a healing herb garden in Detroit, featuring Lavender, Echinacea, Mints, Lemon Balm, and Chamomile plants, and a yellow house with brown trim in support of peace and healing.

In their next class a few weeks later, Karla showed Carrie a picture of the vacant lot across from her family home. They were both very surprised to note the yellow house with brown trim to the left of the vacant land!
Additionally surprising, Carrie later realized the site sits 3 miles from the site of her birth.
Around this same time, in March 2014, Karla was blessed to be able to procure the deed to her family home, and also made inquiries with the Detroit Land Bank about their unused property across the street.

Karla and Carrie visited the garden site for the first time together on March 8, 2014. (Happy International Women’s Day!)
Here we are checking out the garden site from the warmth of Karla's family home.
The day of that first visit, Karla left to facilitate healing at her center, and Carrie went to an event called “Women Creating Caring Communities: We are Solutionaries! Healing Ourselves and Our Communities.”
It was a prefect beginning.
The rest is herstory! :)
